To reiterate...

Three things happened yesterday which lead me to believe fate was driving home the point that I look young.

1.  As I was dropping off my wife's immunization records at the local state college (she's going back to school to get her accounting degree), the cashier looked up and asked me, "Oh, are you an incoming freshman?"

2.  Patient (in the halls):  "Your parents must be so proud of you that you're a nurse at such a young age."

3.  (Different) Patient:  "When will the doctor be by to see me today?"  Nurse:  "He's here. He's the 12 year-old at the computer over there."

trying to compile a list for the perfect doctor.

[] yes one the looks the part.
too young looking and we think he/she not experienced.
too old looking and we think he/she
is perhaps out of the newest medical advances training loop.don't get offended..its just human nature at work.
if you don't look the part then you have to try harder to make us feel confident in you.

[] someone who listens to our endless complaints as we rattle them off from a to z. we've been waiting a long time just to see you
and trust me,often we've rehearsed everything we feel we needed to say to you....and our families have told us to ask and tell you these things too. so you aren't just talking to one patient...essentially you are probably dealing with a number at once ...in a away.
if you stop us a "g" ....we feel complelled to start over at "a" again. just human nature at work again..i guess.

[] let us see that you've washed your hands before even coming near us.

[] someone who doesn't look sicker than we are. the last thing we need is to catch something else
from you.

[] when you are telling us what we should do or what you are going to do to help our problem, slow down your rate of speech.our minds are racing, trying to take in a lot of info and trying to make value judgements.sometimes when i leave there i've often wished i had a transcript of the conversation.

[] when we are with you...let us think that we are number 1,even if we are 99 on a list of 200.

[] if you can and if its appropriate...please by all means do try to make us smile.that sense of relief that a smile gives us is
so very reassuring when we are overwhelmed and unsure about our problem.
laughter is truly the best medicine.

asking a lot huh ? but remember this was a list for the perfect doctor.
(i'm blessed that i have one !!)

I worked with a young looking doctor once. As a second year med student, we walked in to see a patient, and she looked at me and asked if I was the doctor.

I'm in my early twenties, and have braces. It is ridiculously unfair.
