For their own good...

Families in the hospital often do not understand that we cannot keep people against their will.  If you show active suicidality, then we can delay you leaving by three days or until you're evaluated, but that's about it.

Me:  "You understand that if she can tell me where she is, who she is, the date and the consequences of leaving there is nothing I can do to stop her?"

Family:  "Just tie her down if she tries that."

Me:  "I'm not legally allowed to do that."

Family:  "Can we put that tube back down her throat so she can't say that, then?"

Some days-luckily not very often-I think all patients should intubated for their own safety and my sanity.
