Pick a drug, any drug...

While I understand that people want to grasp the things that are occurring to them while in the hospital, typing in everything I say into a Google search while we discuss your case is probably not the best use of your time.

Me:  "I'm going to change your blood pressure medicines a bit; you've been running on the high side since you came in."

Patient:  "What are you changing me to?"

Me:  "I was going to try Norvasc."

Patient:  *typing*  "No, that can cause your legs to swell. Try something else."

Me:  "Oh, um...hydrochlorathiazide then."

Patient:  *typing*  "No, that can mess with your kidneys.  Something else."

Me:  "Lisinopril."

Patient:  "Causes a cough."

Me:  "Benicar."

Patient:  "That one messes with your kidneys, too."

Me:  "How about you tell me what you want to be on, then?"

Patient:  "I can't do that, I'm not a doctor."

Me:  "Exactly."
